The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return. ~ Moulin Rouge
A simply lovely, special way to start the week. Sharing a very poignant celebration, an intimate wedding, with a gorgeous couple no natural disaster could ever keep apart. You may remember Ai and Ryuji from the Red Doors. That little spontaneous leg kick we so love. It was all Ai, her signature move and has subsequently become one of our most requested locations. So when we were asked to photograph their wedding all set for Sunday March 20th this year we were beyond excited and just a little bit dizzy with ideas and inspiration. It was to be a joyous day with family and friends from all over the world. And then of course March 11th happened. And the world changed. In light of the situation the wedding was understandably cancelled.
The earth continued to shake. Ai & Ryuji went to the local ward office and got hitched. Love that. So very them. And then it was decided in mid-June, just as the hydrangeas were in full bloom, that they would have a very small wedding. So that it was all official. There would be a dress and there was talk of a cake. We were so there. With immediate family and closet friends in attendance, everyone commemorated this beautiful coupling for all those who couldn’t be there. And so it was more than an honor to document the day. Beyond special to feel the love and happiness they so deserve. Ai was radiant. Glowing from the minute she ducked out from behind the church entrance. Ryuji looking very cool, no flip-flops/bare feet in sight. Here are some moments…
The ceremony was held in the quaint chapel on the grounds of Sophia University. In the heart of Tokyo. It was sincere and meaningful, vows spoken, smiles often. We especially loved the part where Father warned all participants to use clear, tangible lettering in the signing of the Marriage Certificate. There were kisses and family portraits and then we moved outside, to that magic garden.
It was threatening rain. But it didn’t. It knew not to, not today. The diffused light was just dreamy and ethereal. A beautiful canvas to remember the day. No direction needed, not even when the boys went all GQ on us. Because today was all about reactions and living in the moment. And their story.
Ryuji + his family.
Ai + her family.
Everyone. In hearts + minds.
The reception was held in the randomly delicious Italian restaurant Ai & Ryuji had lunch at following their city hall nuptials back in March. It was just so much fun, overflowing love and endless conversation. The mimosa’s were a hit and then there was the cake, featuring a rugby player and his tackled bride. A day full of meaning and delicate nuance. And we can never thank them enough for including us.We so loved being a part of this chapter.
From red doors, to enchanted gardens and everything in between. It has been quite the beginning to a life together. Forces of nature finding each other. A true love story. Just cannot wait to see what happens next. With love x
