Kyoto Engagement & Pre-Wedding : Two Cultures – One Heart

April 22, 2014

“The world is its own magic.” ~ Shunryu Suzuki

Aloha!!! We are currently in Hawaii for a gorgeous multi-day wedding we have all been dreaming of for more than a year. Yohko & Vijay…we just adore you. And we love that your story with us started in Japan and has crisscrossed continents, oceans & cultures. That your magical celebration is almost here is beyond exciting. We are just so delighted to document your epic (Stereo!!) love & share in this with your family & treasured friends here in Hawaii. So it’s just the time to feature the Engagement session from late last year – a tale of cities, love & dovetailing traditions.

We were thrilled to receive one of just 6 Silver Distinctions & above from WPPI (Wedding & Portrait Photographers International) for Yohko & Vijay’s Engagement album in the prestigious 16×20 Print,  Album & Filmmaking Competition earlier this year… from thousands of entries from around the world. The WPPI International Awards of Excellence are the most prestigious of all awards in our wedding & portrait industry. So to say that we are beyond honoured is a complete understatement. The winners gallery is HERE if you’d like to take a look. Yohko & Vijay, we can never thank you enough for just being a dream to collaborate with. Your story wrote itself…

We collided in Kyoto for an extraordinary experience showcasing Yohko’s Japanese heritage & Vijay’s Indian one. A complete departure from their US home…The prelude for a life together. On an early winters day. First in Kimono. In the quaint cobbled streets of Gion Shirakawa, willows & an age-old shrine the canvas. Then a transformation to Sari. A celebration of him. With her. Complete soul mates. And then their full moon appeared (sigh…they celebrate a “moonaversary” every month…). We waited & waited & waited. And finally under a cloudy December sky it materialized for the sweetest, briefest time. Ephemeral. The ever-present anchor to their story. Their history already in the making. But we weren’t quite finished…we took on the night some more and then connected a few days later in Tokyo for the finale. More Sari in the city, bright lights & a dazzling Ginza (with some snow from us!!!) the perfect stage. We simply cannot wait for what’s next… Read more

Kyoto Engagement Photography : Early Spring Blossoms

“Blossom by blossom the spring begins.” ~ Algernon Charles Swinburne

The fleeting blossoms are a breathtaking memory right now. Palm trees swaying in the breeze (ok, trade winds!!!) are our current view. We find ourselves in Hawaii, beautifully excited about our upcoming multi-day wedding. It will be a celebration of cultures. Much like today’s featured Engagement Session from March in Kyoto (with the wedding to share very soon). Tomoko & Stephen, a collision of cultures; Japan, Korea, Australia. We had some time together before their elegant Kobe wedding to explore the ancient capital & the traditional side of Japan. In the cobbled Kyoto streets, with a few super early Sakura in bloom & the striking plums on show. Whisked away from their everyday life to one of Kimonos (a family heirloom), and all the trimmings. It was a delightfully reserved, quiet & sweet experience.  Time for them to just be. And share this adventure together (and for our driver to point out an array of randomly fabulous historical facts…). Read more

“Autumn carries more gold in its pocket than all the other seasons.” ~ Jim Bishop

A beautiful, head-over-heels Tokyo Pre-Wedding & Engagement experience to feature today. From the road. Between internet connections. We’ve had a life-changing week here in the US with WPPI now an extraordinary blur & so much to share once we’re back in the office next week. For now we fall in love with Tokyo all over again. This time with our gorgeous couple Sharon & Kyo. From Singapore. Perfect soul mates, we already adored from all our planning together. And when their late November date rolled around we just had the most fabulous fall day together. From floating high over the city to frolicking in the foliage of dreams, we then took on the city after dark. We are beyond thrilled the album we created from our time together received a much coveted Silver Award in the Engagement Album Category of the prestigious WPPI 16×20 Print  & Album Competition last week. Will post the album in full in the coming weeks. Time now to “Fall” in Love again… Read more

“Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.” ~ Albert Einstein

Life… sharing a poignant full circle today. It was only a few years ago we were in Tohoku unbelievably documenting one of the worst natural disasters in history. Never imagining a time we would ever be back telling life’s most beautiful stories. And yet here we are. At the onset of a glorious fall. At the request of our couple in one of the most stunning World Heritage UNESCO listed areas we’ve had the chance to explore…glorious Towada-ko & Oriase Gorge. “If you still believe in magic,
you’re subject to enchantment.” ~ Toba Beta

The season of Love is here… for us though it never really ends. With the last lovely few weeks full of client meetings, bookings, WPPI preparation, a Snowmageddon Tokyo session we are still not quite over, all the while getting ready for our beautiful Spring Pre-Wedding experiences.  Just around the corner. Our Pre-Weddings take us all over Japan. We adore them. And we feature today one of our many Fall encounters (with so many more to come). Almost a year in the planning with our darling Hong Kong couple, that saw us collide in Kyoto. A Kyoto pre-wedding and an Arashiyama pre-wedding. Combined. Exploring this endlessly enchanting city & the iconic, tranquil Sagano Bamboo Forrest & Togetsukyo Bridge at Arashiyama. Just try to forget the hoards and hoards and hoards of people. Donald Duck gets an exception… of course. Reveling in exploding nature, at it’s most spectacular. Chloe & Edmond were show-stopping in Gion, it was the happiest of happy days. An amazing pre-show to their life together… Read more

“Hello… I live here!” ~ Carrie, Sex & The City.

October. And it’s our season of Love, like no other. Our busiest month of weddings ever and we are just so excited, honored and yes, hopelessly giddy to be part of all these stories. This weekend brings us a double wedding and next week and the week after…you get the picture and we simply cannot wait. So in preparation we always love to tell a little prelude, a teaser, in an engagement session. In a place, at a time that’s relevant to our beautiful couples. A chance for us all to connect and collide before the blur of the big day. And today it is Mariko & Shogo. Starring on that most iconic of crossings. Shibuya. A place they spent time crafting their own story. So on a Wednesday night in late September in peak hour we took to the streets. And it was just them and the lights and the romance that is Tokyo. A 24 hour non-stop parade of life. Which stood still, just for a while, just for them… Read more

“Quel night.” ~ Breakfast at Tiffany’s

LOVE. Literally. Yuka & Sam certainly don’t need any signs to indicate just how head-over-heels-in LOVE they are.  It is SO clear. Right from the get go. Beautiful soul mates. So perfect for each other. This was going to be one love-fueled engagement session with the countdown so ON for their end of July dreamy wedding. And we couldn’t wait to get the story started. With Yuka’s background in Wedding Planning, she is our ideal bride. With her overflowing bridal folder, she knows what she wants and we so love that. An inspired vision and canvas.  So for the E-Session we started off with the literal version & a romp in the park & and ended up where it all began, in the iconic Ginza streets. Outside that one and only store, where in late December last year Sam dropped to his knee and proposed. Little turquoise box in hand. We simply had to go back. And here are the highlights…so in love, so Tokyo, so Yuka & Sam… Read more

“Spring is when life’s alive in everything.” ~ Christina Rossetti

The Season of  Love…it’s here. And we are just beyond excited for all the Love Stories in the making over the coming months. We have a May like no other. And it all starts for us tomorrow with the chic and elegant wedding of Shoko & Masahide. In Ginza. And we cannot wait. We connected through a love of photography. And they had us at that. That, and their beautiful way, infectious smiles and love for each other. So we arranged for an Engagement Session, an integral part of our Wedding Collections & experience. It’s a time for us all to be, get to know each other, to take this beyond the photos, before the whirlwind of the big day. And it all unfolded in the late Tokyo afternoon. A resounding chorus (they met in choir…) of sunbeams and golden light at the start of spring, in synergy with their story. Casual, lovely & effortlessly real. From quiet reflective moments amid sensational blossoms, to gorgeous fields of flowers & laughter, a life in front of them. This one, was a walk in the park… Read more

Tokyo Engagement Photographers : Intoxicating Blossoms

“A perfect cherry blossom is a rare thing. You can spend your whole life looking for one, and it will not be a wasted life.” ~ The Last Samurai

More blossoms, blossoms, blossoms today. Right when we are in the middle of planning for all our upcoming Fall Weddings, Pre-wedding & Engagement sessions much later this year. October, November & December are almost fully booked. Bring it all on. Nature…we are counting on you in all your glory but know how unpredictable you can be….  So we continue to remain in humble awe always and are open to anything and everything that comes our way. Fingers crossed for blankets of outstanding color this coming Autumn…

And now back to our current season. Spring fever continues…Even with the blossoms so early this year our featured couple today couldn’t have timed it better. At the end of March they/we were all treated to a magnificent show. Amour and the blossoms. So quintessentially Japan. And such a romantic chapter in the love story of this gorgeous couple from Hong Kong. Their engagement story. A breathtaking location. We are spellbound. The Sakura simply historic, forever regal, overwhelmingly majestic. I bet they have some stories to tell… And not a blue tarp in sight… We all got carried away (and me smartly chastised by the guard for having too much romantic fun…won’t be doing that again…!!) Apparently it’s not the Japanese way to do what we were doing, but no one else seemed to mind.  We were all lost in the breathtaking beauty of the season. Blame it on the blossoms. It was a spectacular session to celebrate a love story that will culminate in the wedding at home next year. Natural, effortlessly chic and so much fun. The blossom intoxication lingers… Read more
